Understand the myocardium diseases which are characterized by disturbances of functions of heart as the term "cardiomyopathy". In this sense it is possible to speak about damages of a myocardium at an ischemic heart disease (an ischemic cardiomyopathy), at arterial hypertension (a hypertensive cardiomyopathy), at heart diseases (a valve cardiomyopathy).

Earlier understood primary diseases of a myocardium of an unknown etiology as the term "cardiomyopathy". Diseases of a myocardium of the known etiology or connected with defeat of other systems were defined as specific (secondary) diseases of a myocardium. Damages of a myocardium at an ischemic heart disease were excluded from this group of diseases of a myocardium, arterial hypertension, heart diseases and diseases of a pericardium.

In clinical practice understand group of diseases which cornerstone genetic predisposition to damage of a myocardium with the phenomena of its dilatation, a hypertrophy or restriction is as cardiomyopathies. According to it distinguish the following options of cardiomyopathies:
• dilatatsionny cardiomyopathy;
• hypertrophic cardiomyopathy;
• restrictive cardiomyopathy;
• aritmogenny right ventricular cardiomyopathy.
